Currently, toolkits used for education tend to emphasize conventional subjects rather than emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI). This narrow focus may hinder students’ capacity to readily grasp and integrate these new technologies, potentially leading to widespread resistance to adoption. This design explores the development of the Artificial Intelligence Discovery Toolkit (A.I.D.T). A.I.D.T is an interactive educational tool designed to introduce 11-12-year-old primary school children to the concept of AI. By providing an interactive and engaging learning experience at a young age A.I.D.T aims to demystify AI and foster a deeper understanding, laying a solid foundation for future engagement with this emerging technology.
This page describes the design of my final bachelor project at the Technical University of Eindhoven. For the FBP I have created A.I.D.T (Artificial Intelligence Discovery Toolkit), an interactive toolkit designed to familiarize primary school children aged 11-12 with Artificial Intelligence. The A.I.D.T toolkit provides a hands-on, engaging way for children to learn about AI through modular interactions, fostering both understanding and creativity. The design process involved extensive research, brainstorming, prototyping, and user testing to ensure that the toolkit meets its educational goal effectively. Key insights from user tests highlighted the toolkit’s strengths in making AI concepts accessible and fun for children, while also revealing areas for improvement, such as increasing module interaction flexibility and finding a balance between creativity and guidance. The iterative development process, supported by feedback from children, educators and coaches underscored the importance of balancing guided learning with opportunities for open-ended exploration. While the current form of A.I.D.T is a significant step towards integrating AI education into primary schools, future iterations could further enhance its impact by expanding module capabilities and exploring other formats. Overall, A.I.D.T stands as a promising educational tool that not only demystifies AI for young learners but also sparks their curiosity and creativity, preparing them for a future where AI plays a crucial role.
